Hi, I’m Elowyn, a recent addition to Alpensee. I do incredibly thorough metagame analysis and I’m going to be sharing some of my thoughts on the San Juan special event.
1st (Ben Grissmer US) Hatterene/Indeedee-F/Torkoal/Urshifu/Iron Hands/Farigiraf
Ben Grissmer wins the San Juan special event using Hard Trick Room, showing that it’s an archetype to be respected going forward. The Iron Hands with Safety Goggles variant was the one chosen here, with an Expanding Force Farigiraf using Protect instead of the Nasty Plot we’ve seen on previous iterations. The team has been semi popular leading up to this event, getting multiple day 2 placements in Seattle, and a T32 finish there as well, though using a different variant. Iron Hands with Safety Goggles and Swords Dance is an interesting tech against opposing Amoon P2 teams, and is able to get rid of them with frightening efficiency.
23rd (Matt Bruno) Torkoal/Flutter Mane/Incineroar/Farigiraf/Raging Bolt/Lilligant-H
Torkoal under Trick Room seems to be an amazing pick in general, with the American sun team making an appearance in Day 2 of San Juan. This archetype differs from its european variant in Marco Sun but keeps the same core of Incineroar, Farigiraf, Torkoal and Flutter Mane, albeit with different sets. Incineroar chooses to drop the Assault Vest for an even more offensive set, donning Clear Amulet with Close Combat to remove other Incineroar. Farigiraf drops Sitrus Berry for Throat Spray and Flutter Mane replaces Specs Trick Room for Power Gem, as a move away from Ursaluna. Ursaluna and Ogerpon-C themselves have been replaced by a much faster concept, Lilligant-H and Raging Bolt. Raging Bolt is able to use the Assault Vest here, running a fully offensive set with Weather Ball and Dragon Pulse to preserve accuracy and Special Attack. Tera Grass on Raging Bolt is also notable as Amoonguss respect. This variant was also piloted in Seattle and seems to be taking over as the major sun team.
